As with other Hollywood stars, Louise Brooks’ image could be found on a number of commercial products. In the 1920s and 1930s, these items included postcards and trading cards, as well as books, sheet music, puzzles, games, calendars, a writing tablet, and Cuban matchboxes, among other things.
Want to draw attention to your business? Why not put a picture of a pretty movie star on your calling card or free calendar? This page on the Louise Brooks Society archive is devoted to promotional calendar – blotters — each of which dates, or likely dates, from 1928. The use of the same color portrait of Brooks suggests the same American and / or Canadian company might have been behind the manufacture of these vintage, “give away” items. Considering their age, and considering that these objects were considered disposable, it is incredible that such ephemera has survived. Nevertheless, they did!
