Though never considered a major star, Louise Brooks graced the covers of a number of magazines in her day, both in the United States and around the world. This page, one of a handful which document Brooks’ magazine cover appearances, feature vintage covers published in the United States, including one very rare example from Puerto Rico. Covers are presented in chronological order. Notably, Brooks appeared on far fewer covers in the United States compared to the number on which she appeared in Europe; it is also notable that among her American covers, the majority of them are not movie magazines — but rather of the tabloid / pin-up variety — all of which goes to show Brooks was better appreciated, if not better known, overseas. The Town Crier, on which Brooks appeared four times, was a weekly magazine published by the Wichita Beacon, one of the two major newspapers published in Brooks’ hometown. Certainly, the February 14, 1926 issue of the Town Crier is one of the most unusual of Brooks’ cover appearances. It shown actress Colleen Moore bursting through the cover image.
If you have additional covers or further information on any of these titles, or if you have a better scan of any of these covers, please CONTACT the Louise Brooks Society. (The black-and-white Town Crier covers are especially in need of an upgrade, as does Exhibitor’s Daily Review.) Thank you for your interest. A directory of other pages on the LBS website which feature cover appearances can be found on Louise Brooks – “Cover Girl”.
