Louise Brooks’ one and only book, Lulu in Hollywood, was published in 1982. Today, it is considered a classic of film literature, and has been published around the world in a handful of languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, and Japanese. This page presents a gallery of international editions of Lulu in Hollywood. Most the books shown below follow the text of the 1982 American edition, except for the 2008 Russian edition, which is based on the 2000 revised and expanded University of Minnesota edition, which contains eight (instead of seven) essays and the Kenneth Tynan (instead of the William Shawn) introduction. Like the Minnesota edition, the Russian edition also contains an acknowledgement to the Estate of Louise Brooks, the George Eastman Museum, and to Thomas Gladysz (Томасy Гладышy) and the Louise Brooks Society!
Notably, the international editions of Lulu in Hollywood differ in their cover design from the American edition, while three of them are differently titled. The German edition, for example, is titled Lulu in Berlin und Hollywood. One French edition from 1983 is titled, simply, Louise Brooks, while a later French edition from 2008 is titled Loulou . The Japanese edition of Lulu in Hollywood, from 1984, is radically different in its design, its selection of text, and its selection of images. The Japanese edition, edited by Shohei Ooka and titled Ruizu Burukkusu to “Ruru” (or Louise Brooks to “Lulu”) is a 116-page, heavily illustrated, Japanese language book about and by the actress; it contains Brooks’ “Gish and Garbo” and “Pabst and Lulu” along with a filmography and each of the images contained in Lulu in Hollywood.
